If you have
Windows and Windows Server newly installed (consider Windows 10 and Windows
Server 2016), it is difficult to understand the difference between the two.
They have a similar desktop, a similar start button, and the same task view
button. Both have the same kernel and are capable of running the same software.
For example, Google Chrome or Microsoft Office can be run on both.
But that's where the
similarities come in. Microsoft has set Windows 10 to work on a desk and
Windows Server as a server to serve other users / computers on the network.
Windows Server can also get a desktop. But Microsoft recommends using a
graphical user interface (or removing it) to save more resources. Installing
the Nano Server with Windows Server 2016 provides a very simple environment. It
uses less space and less RAM than the traditional installation version. This is
similar to what Linux servers are designed to compete with.
- Special software for server
Once you have
the GUI enabled, with the launch of the Windows Server operating system, a
Server Manager program is running that makes a fundamental difference between
Windows 10 and Windows Server. This program allows servers to perform specific
actions. Windows deployment services can automatically install Windows on
computers connected to the network. Static IPs can be provided to client
computers connected to the DHCP service. Active Directory Domain Services allows
you to keep all computers under one domain. These features and services are not
included in the standard Windows version and require third-party software.
Windows Server has the ability to move files faster using SMB Direct. In
addition to file systems like FAT32 and NTFS, there is a file system called RFS
(Resilient File System) that can streamline data faster and faster. To get
those features without the server version you will need to install the version
"Windows 10 Pro for Workstations".
The servers are
designed to be interconnected. When one server performs one or two tasks,
another may offer different services. This is why a server operating system
needs to have different features than a normal computer.
- Dealing with increasing amounts of CPU and RAM
Windows Server can work with more capable hardware. Maximum RAM capacity
of the Windows 10 Pro version is 2 terabytes. However, the Windows Server
operating system can extend up to 24 terabytes. Usually we don't have much RAM
on a desktop computer, but a server that does a lot of work requires more RAM.
The server has a number of responsibilities, including increasing the number of
users accessing it, the amount of services to be provided, and the ability to
do more work at a time without slowing down.
Windows 10 also has limitations for processors. Windows 10
Home Version supports only one physical CPU. Windows 10 Pro bet on two physical
CPUs. But the Server 2016 operating system can support up to 64 sockets. Also,
Windows 10 versions configured for 32-bit only work for 32 core processors,
while 64-bit supports up to 256 core. However, Windows Server has no core
limit. It is unlimited.
With the
exception of Server Version, such upgrades can be achieved by installing
"Windows 10 Pro for Workstations" version 4 CPUs and a maximum of 6
terabytes of RAM.
- There are limitations
Usually a new feature is added to each operating system version and an
update is added. LTSB in Windows 10 Enterprise Edition does not have regular
updates like that. It is set up for business and updates are coming every six
months. Here's a look at the LTSB version of Windows Server that has many
limiting factors. Software like Cortana, Microsoft Store, Microsoft Edge has
been removed, making it as simple as possible without the bloatware.
Windows Server also has an Internet Explorer web browser. It is
restricted to external websites and you have to add an exception to download
Chrome. This has been done to provide more security, preventing unnecessary
external influences on the server. Typical Windows versions can sign in with a
Microsoft account (hotmail, etc.), but Windows Server must have a local account
or domain account. Server Version 3 also has the ability to pause the update in
Windows 10 Home Version
-Too expensive
If you have a Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 key, you can install
Windows 10 for free. But buying a Windows Server 2016 license is not easy. That
is, they are not designed for general business. If a large business wants to
run a server, a single license costs between $ 500 (about Rs. 89,000) and $
6200 (about Rs. 11 lakhs). This is why many use Volume License. Windows Server
is mainly business oriented and the amount varies.
If you are looking for a Windows operating system for a
personal computer, the current version of Windows 10 should work fine. The
house has the features to be used for home use. But if you want to control more
computers, and a file server or web server doesn't satisfy that need, Windows
Server might be your best choice.
